3 benefits to adding in frozen produce to your diet.
Frozen is more convenient. A common barrier I hear form patients in consuming fruits and vegetables is the preparation time. Not everyone has time meal prep each week and at the end of a long day, we don’t always have the energy to prepare and cook vegetables. Having frozen bags of vegetables in the freezer to dump into a pan and add some protein to can make vegetables a connivence food rather than the more difficult task. Even on nights when the only option is chicken fingers, you add some frozen broccoli to the side.
Less food waste. We’ve all bought a tub of spinach and let it get soggy in the back of the fridge. June tends to be a busy month for a lot of families with school BBQs, social events and summer sports starting up again. Although intentions may be good while grocery shopping, sometimes life if busy and we don’t end up making all of the meals we intended to. When we over do it on the fresh produce, it can end up in the compost. By buying half fresh and half frozen, you can hopefully reduce the wasted food. Another option is to freeze some of your fresh produce in a sealed bag or container in your fridge if you see it starting to go bad.
Frozen produce is less expensive (sometimes). With the increase in grocery prices, substituting in some frozen fruits or vegetables can save you money. As long as you have space in your freezer, you can purchase frozen produce on sale and keep this for much longer than you can fresh. Compliments brand has recently added several new types of frozen vegetables with different themes such as - stir fry, pasta sauce mix, Italian mix etc so you don’t have to buy just one type of vegetable while on sale.
Remember, when buying frozen produce, make sure to check out the ingredients on the back to ensure that there are no additives or preservatives. Some companies add sugar, salt or even sauces to the frozen vegetables. You want to avoid these and purchase produce that is just the fruit or vegetable.
